Herring Run

The frenzied gulls in this photo are after a school of herring that came in close along the rocky Weekapaug shore on Christmas day. If you look at the center of the picture, just in front of the wave curl, you might detect the brownish shadow of this school of Rhode Island fish. Herring are small, oily fish and are sought after by many predatory species. This time of year, when there are Atlantic herring runs, the predatory list includes gulls, northern Gannets, diving ducks, loons and even seals.
